Liverpool have failed to recapture the form which steered them to the trophy last year but are still firmly in this season’s race for the top four thanks to Alisson’s stunning injury-time winner away to West Brom.
It means the Merseyside giants can leapfrog fourth-placed Leicester in the table with victory over Burnley this evening, ahead of their final match of the campaign at home to Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace.
And while the Reds will likely be bursting with confidence after three wins on the bounce, ex-Newcastle and England striker Shearer – the league’s all-time top scorer with 260 goals – feels they will fall short in their pursuit of Champions League football.
‘I think Liverpool will miss out, just,’ Shearer told Premier League Productions.
‘I know Burnley have looked like they have chucked the towel in already but then Palace, with Roy’s last game and I know he has announced it today…
‘I think they will miss out and I don’t think they will win their last two games.’
Chelsea put themselves in pole position for a top-four finish with a 2-1 win over Leicester in front of 8,000 fans at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Thomas Tuchel was delighted with the performance but stressed that the job was far from complete with his Blues side set for a tough trip to Aston Villa on the final day of the top-flight season.
‘It was a strong performance and well deserved performance,’ the Chelsea head coach told BBC Sport.
‘This is no time for celebration, the job is not done yet, two more games to go (Aston Villa and Champions League final).
‘We’re very happy to play in front of supporters, it was a huge difference today.’
