Anton Ferdinand has revealed he ‘wanted to hurt’ John Terry after being racially abused on the pitch in 2011.

The former footballer explored the issue of racism in the sport in his new BBC documentary Football, Racism and Me and spoke out for the first time on the highly publicised incident which saw Terry banned by the FA for four matches and fined £220,000 after using ‘abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour… which included a reference to colour and/or race’ in relation to Anton during a match.

Terry was accused of calling Ferdinand a ‘f***ng black c***’ while walking away – and Ferdinand didn’t hear this until after the game when his girlfriend showed him the footage.

‘I couldn’t believe my eyes, if I’m honest,’ Ferdinand recalled of seeing the footage for the first time.

‘I couldn’t believe what I was watching.’

He continued: ‘I felt hurt but mainly anger toward him and I wanted to hurt him if I’m honest. I wanted to go and hurt him.

‘What has anyone’s race got to do with it? That shouldn’t even enter your mind.’

Ferdinand explained that it was his late-mum’s presence at the match that prevented him from retaliating.

‘It was only that my mum was at the game because she was the only person who could have stopped me on that day,’ he shared. ‘She said, “I know what you want to go and do, but now’s not the time”.’

Although Terry denied using the words in an abusive context, he was fined by the FA.

He was cleared of racial abuse at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in 2012.

Ferdinand’s brother Rio has said he regrets not speaking out during the race row with his brother and still doesn’t speak to Terry.
