The 34-year-old centre-back had to be helped off the field in the second half of the Gunners’ 2-0 victory away to Newcastle at the weekend and Mikel Arteta will have be sweating on the touchline at St James’ Park ahead of the club’s run-in.
He had only recently returned from an operation on his knee and his latest setback – this time a hamstring issue – looked likely to have cut short his season with four Premier League games and potentially two Europa League matches remaining.
However, according to The Daily Mail, Luiz’s hamstring problem is not as severe as initially feared meaning there is a chance he could pull on Arsenal’s colours again.
Arsenal’s all-important semi-final second leg with Villarreal may come too soon for Luiz, though, meaning Pablo Mari and Rob Holding could continue their run at the heart of Arteta’s defence.
Luiz has less than two months remaining on his current deal in north London and appears certain to leave in the summer on a free transfer.
The vastly experienced Brazilian has made 30 appearances in all competitions this term and 73 in total for the Gunners since arriving from fierce rivals Chelsea back in 2019.
Arteta seemed less-than-optimistic when asked about the extent of Luiz’s injury after Arsenal’s win at Newcastle and said it put a dampener on an otherwise positive afternoon for the north London outfit.
‘We don’t know. He felt something in his hamstring, so it’s not good news,’ the Spaniard said.
‘He’s put such a shift to be back for the team for the last few weeks after the knee surgery and it’s a real shame.
‘Apart from David’s injury, I think that’s all we wanted.
‘We wanted to keep the team fresh, the players with the right attitude to play this game and be able to focus just on today and I think we had a really strong performance.
‘From the beginning, we dominated the game and we got the three points that we needed and it helped for Thursday as well.’
