Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright is backing Liverpool to clinch a crucial victory over Manchester United in this weekend’s much-anticipated Premier League clash.

Defending champions Liverpool travel to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon sitting sixth in the Premier League, four points outside of the Champions League places.

With West Ham, Chelsea and Leicester City currently above them, Jurgen Klopp’s side face an uphill battle to secure a top-four finish with just five matches remaining.

Manchester United will almost certainly finish second this season regardless of Sunday’s result but will hope to damage Liverpool’s top-four chances and delay Manchester City’s title celebrations.

Wright believes the clash at Old Trafford has the potential to ‘very good’ and has tipped Liverpool to come away with three points despite their difficult season.

Speaking on The Kelly and Wrighty Show, he said: ‘Even though you’d have to say Manchester United are going to make the Champions League, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to win a trophy.

‘I think that’s going to be in the forefront of his mind so I’m going with Liverpool. I think it’s vitally important for Liverpool to win the game because they need to get themselves back in the Champions League race.

‘It’s good there’s so much on this game because there’s been a few draws recently and sometimes it hasn’t lived up to the hype. I think this one has got the potential to be very good.’

Solskjaer’s Manchester United will have one eye on next Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg clash against Roma, despite dominating the first leg.

Serie A side Roma led 2-1 at Old Trafford but the Red Devils produced an outstanding second-half performance to win 6-2 and move a step closer to the Europa League final.

Liverpool have not won at Manchester United since 2014, having drawn four and lost four of their past eight matches at Old Trafford.

Asked how important a victory on Sunday would be, Klopp said: More than 100%. Playing Champions League obviously is massive, especially from a financial point of view for the club so it’s really important.

‘I don’t think it will change anything because the situation was difficult before and it is difficult after.’
