Pjanic completed a high-profile €60million (£52m) switch from Juventus to the Camp Nou last summer – with Arthur Melo going in the opposite direction – but the 31-year-old has badly failed to live up to expectations across an underwhelming debut season in Catalonia.
Ronald Koeman is yet to be won over by Pjanic and the Bosnia international has found himself on the periphery of Barca’s squad, with youngsters Ilaix Moriba and Pedri overtaking him in the pecking order.
According to a recent report from Spanish outlet Sport, Chelsea have been closely monitoring Pjanic’s situation and even enquired over the availability of the playmaker ahead of the summer transfer window.
The same publication today claim that Barcelona have been attentive to Chelsea’s advances but will look to bring Jorginho into the equation in exchange in what is being dubbed ‘Operation Pjanic’.
Barca’s hierarchy greatly admire Jorginho and would welcome the idea of a swap if the Italy international is included in the agreement.
The La Liga giants view Pjanic as a strong financial asset but hope to bring in a player of proven quality in return, especially given a large fee is unlikely in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Pjanic is desperate to rediscover his confidence and is said to be open to the prospect of joining another club competing for major honours, with Inter Milan also registering an interest.
It remains to be seen whether or not Chelsea would be willing to part with Jorginho, a player key to the side’s upturn in form both domestically and in Europe since Thomas Tuchel took over the reins from Frank Lampard.
Jorginho has also been linked with a return to Italy – with Juve and Napoli mooted as potential suitors – but the midfielder’s agent recently insisted he had no plans to leave Chelsea.
‘He will stay at Chelsea,’ Jorge Santos told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli last month.
‘He still has a two-year contract with the English club and is only focused on finishing the season in the best possible way.’
