Benidorm writer Derren Litten recalled the shocking moment he witnessed a star punch a crew member on the set of an unknown show.

Litten did not name the actor or crew member involved, or the programme he was working on when the incident happened, but expressed shock that the star involved was not punished for his actions and show bosses did nothing.

In an interview with Daily Star the 50-year-old screenwriter added that the ‘well known’ actor apologised afterwards.

He said: ‘We once saw an actor punch a member of crew. Their response? “What r u going to do? Sack me?”

‘I was up for rewriting everything and getting rid of said person but it was decided, between several execs (and the person who was punched) that an apology was OK.’

Thinking back on what he has witness throughout his television career, Litten said: ‘This industry is insane. The television/theatre industry is kind of a law unto itself.

‘I don’t know any other jobs you can turn up drunk, refuse to do part or all of the day’s work or indeed get your c**k out, and not get fired.’

Litten shared on social media in 2018 that the ITV comedy starring Sherrie Hewson and Tim Healy, about the goings-on at a fictional hotel in Spain, had ended for good after 10 series.

However it was understood at the time that ITV had not made a decision about whether the series was over – although it has not returned since.

The writer had originally planned to pen a Benidorm movie, however in March 2020 he scrapped the idea when his series Scarborough was axed.

In a statement on social media Litten said he would be taking a break from making programmes and open a memorabilia bar in Spain for Benidorm fans instead. The bar would be named Mateo’s after a character from the show.

‘I genuinely thought Scarborough was some of my best work and if it’s not what TV channels are looking for now maybe I should do something completely different,’ he said.

‘So I made a decision to step away from making tv programmes for a while and I sat down and thought about the things I like doing. I like Benidorm, I like drinking, I like karaoke, I like socialising. But how on earth could I make an income from all that?’

‘We will have regular celebrity appearances including Mateo himself, Jake Canuso and of course I’ll be there an awful lot, hosting the karaoke and chatting with the people who made the Benidorm tv series such a success, YOU!!’ he went on.

‘I can’t wait to meet you all, show you around and in some small way help Benidorm get back on its feet.’
