He announced in March that he had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and was reciving treatment.
Thomas was a five-time Grammy Award winner, widely known for his hit songs in the 1960s and 70s.
His career began in the 60s with his band Thomas and the Triumphs, later seeing success with songs like The Eyes of a New York Woman and Hooked On A Feeling, which was famously covered by Blue Swede.
In 1969, Thomas’ song Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head was featured in the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, with the hit receiving an Academy Award for best original song and shooting to number one.
Thomas also saw huge success in the 70s, with his song I Just Can’t Help Believing later being covered by Elvis Presley.
The musician was releasing new music up until 2013, when he dropped his record The Living Room Sessions an album with acoustic arrangements of well-known hits.
Thomas said of his music in 2006: ‘Ever since the beginning I’ve tried to do positive music, even though it has meant a lot of struggles against record companies and producers.
He added to Pentecostal Evangel, a Christian magazine: ‘I want my music to have a positive effect on people. When I perform live I hope the audience will leave with their heads lifted up.’
Thomas is survived by his wife Gloria Richardson, and their three daughters, Paige, Nora, and Erin.
