It’s almost unprecedented for a platform to announce or confirm these numbers itself, and none were officially shared for its previous Premier Access movies Mulan, Raya and the Last Dragon or Cruella, but Disney clearly has nothing to hide: Black Widow has made over $60m globally on Disney Plus too.
Universal went bold with its theatrical-only release for Fast and Furious 9, injecting confidence into the industry with its initial record-breaking debut, but it seems Disney’s split release for Black Widow didn’t harm US or global box office in the slightest as its full opening haul has surpassed $215m (£155m) .
Black Widow sees Scarlett Johansson’s hero in a quest between Civil War and Infinity War, as confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past, which we delve further into than ever before, arises.
Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy, and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.
Despite questions over its relevance, considering Natasha Romanoff’s fate in Avengers: Endgame, fans are clearly still thirsty for Marvel content; in fact, Disney also revealed that since the launches of popular Marvel series WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Loki on the company’s streaming platform, MCU fans have consumed almost three billion hours of content on Disney Plus to date.
With A Quiet Place Part II’s initial pandemic-era opening weekend box office crown taken by Fast and Furious 9 and now seized by Black Widow, it seems cinemas are finally beginning to recover after a brutal 2020 ahead of more blockbuster releases, including The Suicide Squad, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals, and Daniel Craig’s last Bond outing, No Time to Die.
