A four-year-old boy has been left orphaned after both his parents died suddenly from coronavirus within months of each other.

Relatives of Raiden Gonzalez are hoping to organise an extra special birthday for him after a torrid year in which his dad, Adan, 33, and mum Rozie, 29, both died.

The family, based in San Antonio, Texas, have been hit hard by the pandemic and grandmother Rozie Salinas told NBC News that Raiden keeps telling her he wants his mum back.

Dad Adan, a truck driver, became ill after a co-worker contracted the disease. He was hospitalised soon afterwards and died from the virus on June 26.

Wife Mariah, a teacher, was still grieving from the loss of her husband when she also caught coronavirus in October. She died on October 5 hours after first feeling ill. The hospital later confirmed she had tested positive.

Gran Rozie told NBC: ‘He misses his mom since he was a mama’s boy. Just this morning he told me that he wishes he had his mom back and he just wanted her back.

‘I mean, what do I tell him? You know, so I just told him that they’re now angels watching over us and protecting us.’

Raiden turns five on November 28 and the family are planning to go all out to help cheer him up.

It’s going to be a dinosaur-themed party and all of Raiden’s favourite things including the fire department and several truck clubs have been invited to take part in a socially distanced parade.

Rozie also said that she is planning a memorial for both her daughter and her son-in-law.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by friends which has already earned $40,000 – $15,000 dollars more than its original target.

Rozie said its caring for her grandson that is keeping her going after the loss of her daughter.

‘He’s what keeps me going, just with his friendly and constant reminders telling me how much he loves me,’ she said. ‘He’s always thanking me for taking care of him, but I’ve just got to think about him. It’s a hard situation to process.’
