As the ceremony gears up for another night of one-off performances and raucous backstage behaviour this evening – with live audiences back for the first time in months – all eyes are on the host again.
After years of the show being hosted by the likes of Ant and Dec, Dermot O’Leary and Emma Willis, Jack has nailed down the spot and helped shift the focus of the awards.
From the good natured mocking of guests, to stirring controversy with outspoken pundits, he’s helped to make the Brits a real talking point again.
Whether it is p***ing off members of Little Mix to getting drunk with Lizzo, he’s brought us plenty of memorable exchanges over the course of the last three ceremonies – hopefully he can match them this evening.
Here are his best moments from years gone by.
When he brought up Jesy from Little Mix’s Jamaican accent
The first of Jack’s run-ins with Little Mix came during his debut, when he managed to leave Jesy looking less than impressed by making a savage joke about her attempt at a Jamaican accent.
The singer became an unexpected viral star a few years back for her incredible (and inexplicable) impression of a Jamaican accent, and since then the internet has never let her live it down.
Jack left Jesy’s bandmates struggling to hold back laughter when he sat at their table during the ceremony in 2018.
He said: ‘Last month you hit three billion views on YouTube, and only two billion of those are people watching you trying to do a Jamaican accent, Jesy.’
When he stirred the drama between Little Mix and Piers Morgan
A year later, he was back at it after stirring the drama between the group and Piers Morgan.
Seated at the girls’ table once again, Jack referenced the Little Mix photoshoot which saw them pose nude – something which Piers had taken umbrage to.
Referencing the feud between them, Jack asked: ‘What would you say to that dutty wasteman?’
A shocked Jesy replied: ‘Jack!’
Not satisfied, Jack went on to make a joke at Piers’ expense by bringing up the naked shoot again, saying: ‘Voluptuous breasts, four chins, it must have been like looking in the mirror [for him]’.
When he roasted the Brits itself for a lack of female nominees
The awards in 2020 were hit with a backlash due to a shortage of female nominees.
There were no women in the British album of the year and British group categories. Rather than play down the criticism, to his credit Jack decided to take aim at the awards themselves by making reference to the lack of women being recognised.
While talking about how the awards were being held in the eco-conscious spirit of sustainability, the presenter said: ‘The Brits has been recycling all the same excuses for why so few women were nominated.’
Downing tequila with Lizzo
The Brits came close to descending into chaos in 2020, with the backstage scenes resembling the kind of raucous showbiz parties we’d all love to be invited to.
After he went to take a sip of Harry Styles’ drink just before an ad break, Jack was horrified to find it was neat tequila.
‘Harold, always a pleasure. What is this, apple juice?’ he said, before trying it himself. ‘Oh god that’s tequila, that is literally neat tequila. He has gone off the rails.’
As the Watermelon Sugar singer burst out laughing, Jack passed the drink to Lizzo, who quick as a flash downed the entire thing and had the crowd on their feet.
His awkward exchange with Harry Styles’ sister
During the same ceremony, Jack endured an awkward but hilarious moment during a separate interview with Harry.
As he worked his way through the audience and found the former One Direction star, he found himself in a sticky situation with the singer’s sister Gemma.
Sitting down next to Harry, he turned to a women also sat on the table and said: ‘I don’t want to pry, have you brought someone with you tonight?
Harry simply pointed to her and said: ‘That’s my sister.’
‘Sister? Oh God, sorry!’ Jack said, clearly embarrassed.
As he tried to dig himself out of the situation, he said: ‘No, no. That’s great. Keep it in the family.’
‘Not keep it in the family, I meant… It’s nice to bring your family. I brought my mum. I brought my mum with me.’
Very awkward, indeed.
His savage Ed Sheeran takedown
Early on in his first, Jack set out his stall as presenter and made it clear he’d be pulling no punches with a pretty savage Ed Sheeran takedown.
Discussing Ed’s meteoric success, which had seen him become one of the biggest popstars in the world with his huge album ÷ the year before, Jack put a question to the crowd.
‘Is there anything he can’t do?’ he asked, before saying: ‘Tan?’
His infamous run in with Liam Payne and Naomi Campbell
Jack has managed to annoy a few people during his stints hosting the show to date – but Liam Payne is the only star who was so p***** off that he actually challenged Jack to a fight.
It came after Jack mocked his romance with Naomi Campbell at the Brit Awards in 2019.
Joking about the rumoured romance between the pair, Jack said: ‘Now it’s time for our next award. To present it, a supermodel and supermodel Naomi Campbell’s current squeeze.
‘His surname’s Payne, which is what he’ll be in a world of if he crosses her — it’s Liam Payne and Winnie Harlow.’
More than a year after the awards, The Sun reported that Liam challenged Jack to a punch as a result of the jibe.
‘I take it as a joke, it is what it is, but she was not happy. Jack, you got me in a lot of s**t that night. So me and you are going to do a charity boxing match,’ Liam is thought to have said.
When he tricked Cheryl and Liam Payne – and gave us that ‘drunk woman’ moment
Jack has a history of annoying former One Direction star Liam, it seems.
Back in 2018, Liam was in the audience with his then wife Cheryl Tweedy, having welcomed their son Bear into the world the previous year.
After some awkward chat between the couple and presenter, Jack turned to the camera and urged them to wave to the ‘little guy watching at home’.
While Liam and Cheryl thought they were waving to Bear, though, Jack instead said ‘Hello Nile!’ in reference to former bandmate Niall Horan.
The best bit about it? It brought us the incredible ‘drunk woman at Brits’ moment, where the viral star and instant meme in the background eyeing up the camera turned out to be Haim’s Este Haim.
The Brit Awards airs tonight at 8pm on ITV.
