Deviation Games has signed a deal with Sony to create a wholly original triple-A game, no doubt exclusively for the PlayStation platforms. Although it hasn’t been stated whether it’ll be a PlayStation 5 exclusive or release for the PlayStation 4 as well.
According to CEO Dave Anthony, development has already begun but it’s currently too early to share anything about it. Whatever the project is, it certainly doesn’t sound small.
‘While I can confirm development is already underway, it’s really early for us to be going into specific details,’ he wrote on the PlayStation Blog, ‘We’re drawing on what we’ve learned over our collective decades making games, but we’re also out to make something fresh and brimming with innovation like you’ve never experienced before.
‘We’re not afraid to say that our ambitions are super high: we’re setting out to make a huge, content-rich game with a focus on a lot of action and a lot of energy, but let’s leave it at that for now and hopefully it won’t be long before we can share more.’
The studio was founded by Anthony and Jason Blundell, both of whom previously worked at Treyarch on the Call Of Duty franchise. Anthony is credited as director and writer for the first two Black Ops games, while Blundell took over as director and writer for Black Ops 3.
This news seems to further reflect Sony’s strategy of investing in studios rather than outright purchasing them. Earlier this year, it formed a similar partnership with Haven, the new studio founded by Assassin’s Creed producer Jade Raymond.
So far, it looks like Sony is taking a very different direction compared to Microsoft, which is openly on the hunt for new acquisitions such as Bethesda. To the point where PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has even appeared to criticise Microsoft’s methods.
