Antonio Rudiger has hailed Cesar Azpilicueta, Reece James and Ben Chilwell as ‘warriors’ following
Chelsea’s Champions League triumph.
Kai Havertz’s first-half goal fired the Blues to a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in last weekend’s European final in Porto.
Chelsea’s defence has performed admirably since Tuchel arrived in January and they impressed yet again at the Estadio do Dragao, thwarting Premier League champions Man City over 90 minutes.
‘We all did well. From the front to the back, everybody defended properly,’ Rudiger told
Chelsea’s official website.
‘But at the end of the day, us defenders are the last line, so we have to do the job well and we did it excellently.
‘[Andreas] Christensen came on and he was straight in the game, [Cesar] Azpilicueta was a warrior, Reece [James] was a warrior, [Ben] Chilwell was a warrior. This is how we had to be and I’m proud.’
Germany international Rudiger has now won the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup at Chelsea.
After lifting club football’s biggest prize, he added: ‘It makes me feel proud. This is something I couldn’t imagine, but now it’s finally true and I will need some days to realise it.
‘I think against a team like this [Man City you have to suffer. You know that they will have the ball, you know that you will suffer and you have to be ready for it.
‘And the chances you have, you need to finish them off, and we knew that we were going to get the chance.’
