Dr Hilary Jones has slammed the UK as a ‘weak nation’ if they feel like the five day Christmas lockdown lift is necessary.

The Good Morning Britain medical expert has warned that the government’s plans for a five-day break from coronavirus lockdown rules over the festive period could have an enormous effect on the country going forward.

Trying to break it down into simpler terms, he added that we could lose the advantage we currently have on keeping coronavirus contained.

‘I think controlling the virus is like trying to control your weight. It’s easy to put weight on, it’s very difficult to lose it,’ he explained.

‘It’s very easy for transmission of the virus to increase, it’s very slow to get those numbers down again.

‘By having this five day holiday at Christmas and three households, which could be a large number of people, gathering in a place with very little ventilation all hugging each other, is going to undo so much of the good work that has already been done.

‘I think the majority of our viewers are together with this, they’re saying let’s not sacrifice the good work.’

‘Are we really such a weak nation that we can’t wait a few more weeks, so that we can actually control this virus better?,’ he added.

‘We’ve still got very high numbers. Wait for the vaccine and get on with our lives next year.’

The GMB viewers agreed, with 77.4% agreeing in a poll that the Christmas plan was unnecessary.

The relaxation of coronavirus restrictions will come between December 23 and 27, allowing up to three households to celebrate Christmas together at home.

Christmas bubbles will have to be exclusive over the five day period, meaning people cannot move from one three-house group to another and must gather in private homes, go to outdoor public spaces or places of worship.

Children whose parents are separated will be able to move between two separate bubbles, but elderly care home resident will not to join their families.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
