Cristiano Ronaldo removing Coca-Cola bottles from his press conference table at the Euros and telling the audience to ‘drink water’ wiped a whopping $4bn off the company’s market value.

The Portugal and Juventus superstar sat down behind the table, picked up the bottles of pop and placed them out of sight, picking up the remaining bottle of water and saying: ‘Agua!’

The message was clear, that Ronaldo was telling his millions of fans to ditch the fizzy drinks and stick to water and the markets reacted in spectacular fashion.

After the 36-year-old’s actions Coca-Cola’s share price fell from $56.10 to $55.22, which may not seem a huge dip, but it represents a fall of $4bn.

A Euros spokesperson said: ‘Players are offered water, alongside Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, on arrival at our press conferences.’

Meanwhile, the drinks giant said in a statement that, ‘everyone is entitled to their drink preferences’ and there are different ‘tastes and needs’ to cater for.

Coca-Cola is one of the official sponsors for Euro 2020, so are unlikely to be happy with what transpired, although by closing on Tuesday their share price had recovered to $55.44.

Ronaldo was not distracted by the off-pitch concerns, scoring twice as his Portugal side beat Hungary 3-0 in their opening match of the competition.

It took until the 84th minute for the heavy favourites to break the deadlock through Raphael Guerreiro, before Ronaldo added a penalty and a fabulous third to give Portugal a flattering final scoreline.

In the Group of Death (Group F), France would beat Germany 1-0 later on Tuesday evening, thanks to a Mats Hummels own goal, with Portugal taking on Germany and France facing Hungary next.
