Conor McGregor was in defiant mood after his UFC 264 defeat to Dustin Poirier on Saturday night, sharing a message with his over 40 million Instagram followers, which read: ‘You need people like me.’

The 32-year-old saw his third bout with Poirier stopped after the first round after he suffered a nasty leg injury, seemingly breaking a bone which stopped him coming back out for the second stanza.

McGregor stepped back, rolling his ankle and his leg bending in gruesome fashion under him, shortly before the end of round one.

The TKO loss leaves him at 1-2 against the Diamond, although given the unusual nature of the defeat, a fourth clash with the American could come around next for the Irishman.

He is certainly not ready to give up on his UFC career just yet, reminding the organisation, and anyone else that will listen, that: ‘You need people like me.’

McGregor was fuming after the defeat, interviewed by Joe Rogan while on the mat in the Octagon, claiming that he was winning the fight before the injury and denying Poirier’s claim that it was a checked kick which broke his leg rather than a stumble.

Clearly a tough loss to take, but McGregor took it extremely badly and unleashed a classless rant directed at Poirier and his wife.

‘I was boxing the bleeding head off him, kicking the bleeding leg off him, the usual shite to close this distance,’ said McGregor.

‘This is not over. If I have to take this outside with him I’ll take this outside, I don’t give a b******s.

‘There was no check, there was not one of them that was checked.

‘Your wife is in my DMs. Hey baby, hit me back up on chat later on. We’ll be at the after party, the Wynn nightclub, baby. You little h*e. F*ck him.’

Giving an update on the injury, UFC president Dana White said: ‘Lower tibia. The shin, I guess. I don’t know how the f**k they figured that out that quick.’
