With a potential second lockdown on the horizon in the UK, will the TV soaps Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks be forced to shut down again?

Reports suggest that severe restrictions in England will be announce in Boris Johnson after projections warned that there could be up to 4000 deaths a day.

A three tier system is currently in place as the UK has hit 1,000,000 Covid cases but the government is being warned to impose measures to stop the NHS from being overwhelmed.

During the first lockdown, many TV shows were shut down for a long time – with EastEnders and Hollyoaks coming completely off air for a time.

However, there is no indication on whether similar measures will happen this time round – as the studios continue to operate under strict coronavirus guidelines and social distancing.

Provided that workplaces – similarly to schools and universities – are able to remain open, the soaps could technically continue.

However it is projected that non essential shops and businesses may be forced to close until December so nothing can be confirmed at this stage.

Spokespersons from all shows have most recently released statements that they continue to adhere to Covid measures in line with government guidelines and the channels’ own rules.
