Coronation Street star Gareth Pierce has spoken out about whether Todd Grimshaw and Daniel Brocklebank’s Billy Mayhew will go the distance after his character’s scheming ways ended up with them getting back together.
On the latest episode of Corrie, Todd was finally able to manipulate his way back into Billy’s heart, successfully managing to keep Billy away from his partner’s ex Paul Foreman (Peter Ash).
But now that Todd and Billy are seemingly back on track, will their relationship stay that way in the long run?
While appearing on Friday’s edition of Loose Women, Gareth, 40, shed light on the situation, acknowledging that many fans were ‘pretty apoplectic’ about Todd winning Billy over.
When asked by Nadia Sawalha whether the couple will ‘go the distance’, Gareth responded: ‘Who knows?’
‘I think that’s the exciting thing about being on Coronation Street is that even we as actors only know maybe one to two months ahead, so I really don’t know where the journey’s going. So it’s exciting for us as well,’ he said.
Gareth also spoke about his on-screen daughter Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby), who wanted them to get back together.
‘Certainly that was a happy time in their life, when they were that kind of solid trio before Todd left that first time,’ Gareth stated.
‘So yeah, I think she wants to get back to that. And that’s what’s motivating Todd as well really, it’s just it’s making him do some pretty awful things.’
He added that even when ‘playing a really hardened villain’ as an actor, ‘you still have to find a way to get on the inside of them’, trying to understand the emotions behind their sometimes questionable actions.
‘So I kind of just try to approach Todd with some compassion really. He’s just a bit broken, I think that he was – and is – so in love with Billy and he’s hurting, he’s jealous, he’s a bit ashamed as well in the way that he let down Billy but also Summer,’ The Archers star stated.
‘So you know when we’re feeling rubbish about ourselves, we can do some pretty ugly things I think as people. So that’s the interesting stuff for me, is getting to the heart of why he’s doing what he’s doing.’
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
