Coronation Street spoilers: Geoff exit revealed as aftermath explodes

It was always inevitable that Geoff Metcalfe would be heading out of Coronation Street – with fans patiently awaiting the day which would see him get his well deserved comeuppance.

And actor Ian Bartholomew has confirmed that he has finished filming with the show and events during the anniversary week will culminate the story in a way – although there’s a huge aftermath to play out as Yasmeen (Shelley King) recovers from her ordeal.

Ian told Metro.co.uk: ‘When I first joined, Geoff was a bumbling idiot – he suddenly developed when they decided to turn the character into something else. We have been playing this now for the best part of two years. If you play a character like this, there is a certain shelf life.

‘It wasn’t a surprise when we realised there was some sort of conclusion. Whatever happens, Yasmeen has to deal with the aftermath and that’s important to stress that it will be continuing. It’s not just about the major incident – it’s what happens after.’

He continued: ‘It’s been a ride! Very challenging, people around us have been supportive and understanding. Everyone in the storyline helped us through. It’s a great honour to be involved in this storyline – it gets to so many people, it’s issue driven and it’s been handled completely well.

‘Before people realised what was happening, the story had already developed and they’d invested so much that it really hit home. We have to bring domestic abuse out of the shadows – talk about it and do something positive.’

Ian has been working with Women’s Aid and even released a charity single in the process about the topic – and he has admitted it has been tough to play at time.

He mused: ‘You just have to separate yourself from the character. There is a certain amount of overlap because you do it all day every day. It is reaching a boiling point – it becomes your life. You have to be able to turn off. My family keep me stable and grounded. You develop over the years techniques to manage.’

Despite knowing he has to say goodbye, Ian recalls his time on Corrie with fondness and enthused that he was always as excited to get to work as he was on the very first day.

He grinned ‘I was amazed and gobsmacked to get the part. I got to this point, the character got here, it’s such an honour to play the anniversary week. On the first day, I looked at the sign, I didn’t believe it I wasn’t sure how I got here.

‘Every day since, I had that same thrill. It’s been an amazing place to work. My first day was with Sue Nicholls and Barbara Knox, Corrie royalty.’
