Harriet Bibby has revealed where she was the moment she received the call to say she had got the role of Summer Spellman on Coronation Street.

The actress, 23, took over playing the 16-year-old character from Matilda Freeman who originally portrayed Summer on-screen, and has been involved in her diabetes storyline.

She told Lorraine Kelly of the moment she found out she had been cast, revealing she almost had to miss the call.

Harriet explained: ‘I’m a singing teacher as well and I had a class full of kids. I saw my phone ringing and thought: “I can’t answer it!”

‘I had to wait until one of the other teachers came in and I said: “Can you just take the class, I need to go and answer this call!”’

Harriet added that it was extra special to be able to join a show that means so much to her family, as they have all watched the soap for years.

She admitted: ‘It’s quite magical and we’ve always watched the show, my family have always watched the show, I’ve grown up watching it so it was very much like being in the telly.

‘It’s like walking into a dream and you go: “Oh my goodness, I’m actually on Coronation Street.”’

Harriet believes that being a bit older in real life than her character has helped her to portray Summer’s diabetes storyline.

She told Metro.co.uk of the scenes: ‘Physically, this is her body is telling her to stop and check itself.

‘Billy has been very worried about her, she’s just found out that they think she’s got an eating disorder and is quite cross.

‘During a heated discussion with Billy, she collapses. Billy then is obviously very shocked and worried, they get her into the ambulance and take her off to hospital to find out what’s up.’

She added: ‘I think finding out you have a lifelong condition that you’re going to have to deal with, you don’t wrap your head around it for a little while.

‘We’ve spoken to Diabetes UK while we’ve been in the run up to this storyline and I think that’s what a lot of people struggle with when they’re diagnosed, is: “Actually, I’m going to have to live with this for a long time”, and I don’t think Summer does really realise that.’

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
