Covid: Brits brave torrential rain to sit in a pub garden

The country has shown its dedication to boozing as people defied wet weather and sat in pub gardens with raincoats and umbrellas.

It has been near-impossible to get a walk-in table in the UK, particularly in London, since hospitality venues were allowed to open outside on April 12.

People have flocked to pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes to reunite with loved ones and have a cheeky drink.

Today was no exception despite the grey sky, consistent rain and chilly temperatures throughout the country.

While there were definitely more empty tables than has been usual in the last few weeks, hilarious pictures have emerged of the tenacious few who would not let the weather stop them from enjoying their new freedoms.

This May has been colder, wetter and more unsettled than is common for this time of year.

The spring has seen its weather shift dramatically from mini-heatwaves, with temperatures hitting the early 20s to random bouts of snow.

Today is already strikingly different to yesterday, which brought blue skies, mild breezes and bouts of sunshine.

Indeed, Brits may have to get used to today’s keeping dry strategies if they want to go out next week as the Met Office predicts ‘longer spells of rain and heavy showers’.

Meteorologists do also expect some sporadic sunshine though, so restaurant bookings will just have to be tactical.

But the weather will only play such an important role in people’s social lives for just over a week more, as hospitality venues are allowed to serve customers inside from May 17.

Meteorologist Martin Bowles previously told Metro.co.uk: ‘We’re not anticipating any sort of proper heatwave temperatures during May really.’

This is because ‘weather patterns are bringing a northerly influence to our weather’, the forecaster said.

Although this week’s rain and wind are expected to be fairly miserable, temperatures in London will stay at around 15°C.

Up north should see similar numbers, dipping slightly towards the end of the week to around 11°C.

Experts think the weather might start to warm up towards the end of May, just in time for the upcoming easing of travel restrictions.

The Government announced yesterday that Brits can travel to 12 countries, including Gibraltar, Israel and Portugal, without having to quarantine when they come home.

This green list will be reviewed every three weeks.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: ‘I regret the favourite summer destinations like France and Spain and Greece are not yet included but every three weeks from reopening, we’ll be reviewing the countries to see how and where we can expand the green list.

‘So this is just a first step. The signs overseas are now more promising as a result of their vaccination programmes beginning to crank up.

‘And as the summer progresses we hope that more traditional tourist destinations will be unlocked.’
