Boris Johnson has suggested France could go on the travel red list with tougher border restrictions likely ‘very soon’.

He said the Government will have to ‘look at’ whether to ban arrivals from its European neighbour amid a surge in Covid cases.

He said restrictions on hauliers would have a big impact because of the extent to which the UK is reliant on imports.

But if necessary he will take a decision, ‘no matter how tough’ it has to be.

This may have to happen ‘very soon’, he added.

The PM told the liaisons committee: ‘We will take a decision no matter how tough to interrupt that trade and to interrupt those flows, if we think that it is necessary to protect public health and to stop new variants coming in and it may be that we have to do that very soon.’
