Dad blew up home with partner and kids inside fearing she’d leave him

Clinton Parren, the blown-up house. Clinton Parren blew up his home in Wythenshawe, Manchester, with kids inside, over worries his partner would leave him for a younger man.

Clinton Parren, who is 11 years older than his partner, has always had a ‘persistent insecurity’ about the age difference

A drunken dad blew up his family home while his children were sleeping after arguing with his partner about whether she would leave him for a younger man.

Clinton Parren, 43, had been drinking with his partner, 32, on December 30 last year at their home in Wythenshawe, Manchester. The couple had a row about Parren’s ‘persistent insecurity’ over their age difference.

His partner of 10 years eventually went upstairs to her son’s bedroom and told Parren to leave after he followed her up.

As the mum fell asleep Parren, who had also used cocaine, grabbed a gas canister marked as ‘extremely flammable’ – which he had bought the day before for camping activities with his kids – then placed it on the family hob and switched it on.

It blew up and Parren’s partner woke up with her ‘ears ringing’ in ‘sheer panic’ among the ‘extreme chaos’, Manchester Crown Court heard.

The ‘tremendous’ explosion happened while the couple’s son, daughter and one of her friends were upstairs sleeping.

The gas canister, described as ‘barely bigger than a can of coke’, blew out the windows, lifted the ceilings from their mounts and brought doors off their hinges.

But fortunately no one was hurt.

The gas canister was later found in the ceiling.

Neighbours said they heard the mum shouting: ‘He’s blew the house up, he’s blew the f***ing house up’.

Parren told police he was sleeping on the sofa at the time of the explosion.

Defending the ‘doting family man’, Gwen Henshaw argued Parren did not predict how dangerous the explosion would be because of how small the gas canister was.

The joiner had also been struggling with unemployment and depression during the pandemic.

Parren admitted causing an explosion likely to endanger life or cause serious injury to property.

Ms Henshaw  said: ‘(The gas canister) was bought by (Parren) in an effort during the pandemic to try and entertain his children by engaging in fun camping activities in the garden.’

She added that Parren’s family is ‘extremely supportive’, saying: ‘They can’t believe what he has done.

‘But they are there as a support network going forward. They want him back, they are not going to get him back immediately.

‘But when he does come back he is committed, not only being the father and husband he was, but to improve upon those aspects that have gone awry.’

He was said to be ‘haunted’ by the risk he put his family in.

As Parren was jailed for three-and-a-half years, the judge told him: ‘Your behaviour was reckless, dangerous and dreadful.’

After the hearing, Detective Natalie Richardson said: ‘This was a reckless act that could have resulted in serious injuries, not only to Parren’s and his own family, but also to his neighbours.

‘He caused substantial irreparable damage to the property and it is a surprising that this did not affect the neighbouring properties.’
