The Spanish goalkeeper has been in good form so far this campaign, with the Red Devils picking up 13 points from their first five games.
He is not going to be dropped in the Premier League after his heroics in east London, but ESPN report that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made no assurances that he will keep hold of the gloves all season, quite the opposite.
The Manchester United manager has in fact told Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton that they will play a part over the campaign, with the Red Devils expecting to challenge in Europe and in both domestic cup competitions.
Solskjaer likes the idea of competition for places, including with the goalkeepers, and will look to chop and change over the season.
The Red Devils take on West Ham again on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup and either Henderson or Heaton will step in for that game, hoping to shine and keep the pressure on De Gea.
Henderson was a fixture in the first team at the end of last season, making 13 appearances in the Premier League, but had to pull out of England’s Euro 2020 campaign with a thigh problem and then suffered with Covid-19 in July.
He is back and fit again and could start against the Hammers at Old Trafford on Wednesday, with Solskjaer expected to make wholesale changes from the side that won on Sunday.
After scoring the winner for the Red Devils on Sunday Jesse Lingard is almost certain to start against his former club on Wednesday, while a number of other players who have struggled for game time will also come in.
The likes of Donny van de Beek, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Diogo Dalot will all play, while summer signing Jadon Sancho may also start after only coming on from the bench on Sunday.
