Demi Lovato has opened up about their non-binary identity, saying that it’s okay if people misgender them – as long as they’re trying.

The Sorry Not Sorry hitmaker came out as non-binary earlier this year, explaining that they now use they/them pronouns.

‘Non-binary’ is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity doesn’t sit comfortably with ‘man’ or ‘woman’. Non-binary identities are varied and can include people who identify with some aspects of binary identities, while others reject them entirely.

The singer said in a new message that even they get it wrong sometimes as it’s a ‘huge transition’ in their life.

Demi wrote: ‘If you misgender me – that’s okay.

‘I accidentally misgender myself sometimes! It’s a huge transition to to change the pronouns I’ve used for myself my entire life. And it’s difficult to remember sometimes!

‘As long as you keep trying to respect my truth, and as long as I remember my truth, the shift will come naturally.

‘I’m just grateful for your effort in trying to remember what means so much to my healing process.’

Demi added: ‘Remember that I love you, and to keep going,’ with the hashtag ‘#NonbinaryAwarenessWeek’.

The 28-year-old came out in May this year.

They wrote on Instagram: ‘Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity and chance to be who we want and wish to be. I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, and everything in between. Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras.

‘Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all – I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward 💖 This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.

‘Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way.’

Demi has been supported by fans and friends following the announcement, with Lizzo recently correcting people on the use of their pronouns.
