Derek Brunson says he is ‘used to people trying to minimise my wins’ after hearing of Darren Till’s ACL injury following his victory over his UFC middleweight rival.

Brunson took on Till in the main event of UFC Fight Night 191 in Las Vegas on Saturday. Despite the latter heading into the contest as a favourite, Brunson largely controlled the contest, sealing the win in the third round via a rear-naked chokehold to make it five wins on the bounce.

The defeat was Till’s fourth in his last five fights and while he made no excuses for his latest setback, UFC legend Michael Bisping later revealed the Liverpudlian had suffered a torn ACL 10 weeks before fight night.

Brunson meanwhile was not surprised to hear the news, acknowledging fighters often enter the cage carrying injuries – including himself.

But the American also suggested it might be used to try and take the gloss off his latest win.

‘I’m used to people trying to minimise my wins or trying to throw a little salt,’ Brunson told MMA Junkie.

‘Not saying Michael was trying to do that, but all fighters are injured 24/7.

‘Look at myself, everybody’s banged up. It’s almost like who’s less banged up going into the fight.’

Bisping acknowledged in the same interview with BT Sport that Brunson was a deserving winner who is also no stranger to carrying injuries into a fight.

‘Perhaps I’m breaking guy code here but there was an injury coming into that fight, he tore his ACL about 10 weeks ago and he never mentioned it,’ Bisping said.

‘It’s an excuse, it’s a reason, whatever you want to call it, he never mentioned it and I’m sure Derek had problems as well.

‘Certainly with that kind of injury, and he said he was having all kinds of medical treatment leading up to the fight.

‘Of course, with that injury, it would’ve hampered his performance but still, you can’t take away from Derek Brunson on that night, Darren chose to step in.’
