Original film copies of 97 episodes of the wildly popular sci-fi are thought to have been lost over the years, but the BBC is bringing back the stories in a new way.
The broadcaster has announced the release of the upcoming animated episode Evil of the Daleks.
The special is the ‘mostly-missing ninth and final serial of the fourth season’ of Doctor Who, which was originally broadcasted in seven weekly editions in 1967.
The BBC said in a statement: ‘Following the success of the existing animations, The Evil of the Daleks fills another gap in the missing Doctor Who content lost in the purge of the BBC archive soon after the programme’s original transmission.
‘However, audio-only recordings of all seven episodes have survived and have been used here to create a brand new fully animated presentation of this lost classic, featuring the original surviving second episode.’
Troughton, who died in 1987, stars alongside Frazer Hines, now 76, who plays companion Jamie in the episode.
The episode follows the pair as they hunt down the missing Tardis, with their quest bringing them face to face with the Doctor’s oldest enemy – the Daleks.
Doctor Who began in 1963, starring William Hartnell as the Doctor. It was rebooted in 2005, with Christopher Eccleston starring as the Ninth Doctor.
Jodie Whittaker currently stars as the Time Lord, playing the 13th Doctor. While there have been rumours about her stepping down after the next series, she’s thought to be continuing in the role through 2022.
Doctor Who series 13 will air on BBC One later this year.
