Dr Hilary Jones has reminded holidaymakers of the risks of jetting off to Spain on today’s episode of Lorraine.
Spain has officially lifted restrictions for British travellers from today, with visitors no longer needing to take a PCR Covid-19 test. However, tourists travelling to the country will still have to quarantine on their return under UK rules.
Highlighting the potential dangers, Dr Hilary began: ‘Spain is desperately keen for tourism as their economy depends on it. I understand that, but they are still on the amber list.
‘You’ve got the risk of going to the airport, getting onto the plane, Spain are even saying you don’t have to have a negative test before you go, this worries me.
‘What you need to remember is, are you insured when you get there? What if you get ill when you get there? The incubation of Covid-19 is five to seven days. If you get ill in Spain you’ll get stuck there, you won’t be able to get back home.
‘Are you insured? Is that what you want?’
Dr Hilary added: ‘You know you’ll have to self-isolate when you come home because they’re on the UK’s amber list. So there are all sorts of problems.’
Britons have also been urged not to travel to Spain by business minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan.
Speaking to Sky News, she said: ‘The Prime Minister has been clear that, for now, amber means “please don’t go unless there is an urgent family reason and so on” because we are still trying to slowly move through our road map to being able to open up on June 21 and we want to do that in a steady and careful way.’
She added: ‘We hope very much that, obviously, the amber numbers will become more green in due course’ but ‘at the moment, today, that means amber countries really aren’t safe to go to’.
Despite countries being classified as green, amber or red – there’s still some confusion about where we can travel.
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
