Ellen DeGeneres has sold the mansion she previously compared to jail for $33.3million (£25m), after buying the Montecito house with wife Porta de Rossi in 2018.

According to Variety, the pair attempted to sell the Balinese-style pile for $40m (£30m), with the home going for $7m (£5.2m) less just a month after first hitting the market.

Reports claimed the unidentified buyer paid the entire purchase price in cash, which is nice if you can get it.

While the talk show host – who has weathered a storm of negative press following claims of a toxic workplace on The Ellen Show set – took a step down from the asking price, Ellen managed to make a tidy profit after she picked up the house for $27m (£20m) two years ago.

Amid extensive renovations, which saw the entire estate kitted out with new security and a re-design, Ellen and Portia subsequently spent another $1.9m (£1.4m) on a smaller, one-bedroom adjacent home that was also included in the recent sale.

If you’re into the nitty-gritty, the sale includes the three-bedroom, 8,200-square-foot main mansion, which boasts 4.5 baths, the detached guesthouse, a separate cabana/gym, and a guard shack for full-time security detail.

This followed a widely-reported burglary of Ellen’s estate in July.

Surrounded by panoramic ocean views, the house also has a kitchen crafted with black marble as well as a fully-stocked library, should books be a big selling point for you.

If you’ll follow us to the backyard, we’re dealing with an infinity swimming pool that faces out to the ocean, so you can look at the water, while you’re in the water, surrounded by lush green grounds – plus a koi pond for those moments of quiet, tranquil reflection as your name trends on social media.

It’s not the only house under Ellen and Portia’s extensive real estate portfolio, as they’re also reported to own a $42.5m (£32m) Beverly Hills mansion, as well as another Montecito house.

Earlier this year Ellen had faced backlash when she likened being stuck at the sprawling home, where she was self-isolating with Portia and their pets during lockdown, to being in ‘jail’.

The presenter had been hosting her talk show virtually from home and clearly frustrated with not being able to head outside, she joked: ‘This is like being in jail, is what it is.

‘Mostly because I’ve been the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay.’

While she was obviously making a joke, it seemed to fall a little flat with many Twitter users pointing out Ellen’s rather luxurious living circumstances.
