Emma Raducanu has gone further than she thought at the US Open this year – so far in fact that she predicted she’d have already been on the plane home by now.

The talented 18-year-old recorded the biggest win of her career on Wednesday as she defeated Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4 to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

This is only Raducanu’s second appearance at a Grand Slam having first burst onto the scene in her run to the fourth round at Wimbledon earlier this year.

The Brit had to go through qualifiers in order to enter the main draw and it seems she wasn’t expecting to get as far as she has with her original flights home booked for before the main draw even got underway.

‘Yeah, I have just been focusing one day at a time, taking care of each day,’ she said.

‘When you’re playing tournaments, you just get into this sort of autopilot mode of your routines, recovering on the day off in between.

‘I didn’t expect to be here at all. I mean, I think my flights were booked at the end of qualifying, so it’s a nice problem to have (smiling).

‘Yeah, I’m just really enjoying the experience. Out there on the court today, I was saying to myself.

‘This could be the last time you play on Ashe, so might as well just go for it and enjoy everything.’

In reaching the semi-finals, she became the first ever qualifier to reach that stage at a US Open.

Sitting at No.150 in the world rankings, Raducanu has also become only the third woman ranked outside the top 100 to reach a US Open semi-final.

But it seems Raducanu is only just finding out about these incredible stats and records herself.

‘Well, I have actually got no idea about any of the records at all,’ she said.

‘It’s the first time I heard today that I was the first qualifier to make the semis. I had no idea before that.

‘Yeah, I’m not here to chase any records right now. I’m just taking care of what I can do on the moment and on the match ahead. Haven’t even started thinking about the next one yet.’

Raducanu will play Czech fourth seed Karolina Pliskova or Greek 17th seed Maria Sakkari in the semis.
