Emma Raducanu’s text conversation before US Open win left Broady surprised

Emma Raducanu showed nerves of steel to beat Belinda Bencic and progress to the US Open semi-finals but prior to the match her thoughts were away from tennis, Naomi Broady has revealed.

The 18-year-old’s incredible debut appearance at the US Open took another huge step forward as she dumped out the No.11 seed, 6-3, 6-4.

Her meteoric rise since bursting onto the scene at Wimbledon earlier this year would have undoubtedly left her nervous heading into the biggest match of her short career so far.

But with her underdog status working wonders, each time she’s stepped on court she’s delivered, and has dropped just 22 games so far coming through the qualifiers.

Raducanu is enjoying every minute of the journey, so much so, that instead of getting tips off experienced British tennis player Broady on the day of her quarter-final, she was happy to chat music and restaurants.

‘I was texting Emma earlier today – I wasn’t sure if she would be responding because I thought she might be off her phone,’ Broady told BBC 5 Live ahead of the match.

‘But she seemed super relaxed. We were speaking about the spread she has done in British Vogue and we both have a love for [American singer] Zendaya, I was also giving her some recommendations for restaurants in New York when she is done in the tournament.

‘She was super relaxed, it was a totally normal conversation.

‘I didn’t mention the tennis because I didn’t want to put my foot in it or change the way she is approaching it.

‘You wouldn’t have thought she was about to go on for her first Grand Slam quarter-final.’

After becoming the first qualifer in US Open history to reach the last-four, Raducanu sent a message of thanks to her support network, including those in New York and at home.

‘Of course, playing Belinda, she is such a great opponent and is in great form, she hits the ball so hard, I had to adjust and adapt and it was a really tough match,’ she said.

‘I am so happy to come through and thank you so much for all your support today.

‘I have an absolutely amazing team, Will is keeping me in one piece, and I have a team back home who could not be here – I am sure they are watching, I hope!

‘Thank you so much everyone, I wish you could be here with me but everything we have been working for has shown here.’

Either Karolina Pliskova or Maria Sakkari await in the semi-final for Raducanu.
