Gareth Southgate has revealed Bukayo Saka sustained a ‘slight knock’ in training on Friday and is a doubt for England’s Euro 2020 quarter-final clash with Ukraine.

The 19-year-old Arsenal star failed to appear in either of England’s opening group stage games versus Croatia and Scotland but produced a man-of-the-match performance against the Czech Republic before impressing as the Three Lions beat Germany to secure a quarter-final spot.

The youngster will have been confident of continuing his run in the side tomorrow night at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico despite the fierce competition for places in Southgate’s attacking ranks.

However, Saka’s minor knock training on the eve of the match which may open up an opportunity for the likes of Jadon Sancho or Marcus Rashford, who have so far been limited to bit-part roles at the tournament.

‘We’ve just got to check on Buyako who had a slight knock today,’ England head coach Southgate told reporters at his pre-match press conference on Friday evening.

‘But other than that everybody is available, yeah.’

Southgate believes the rest of England’s squad are ‘physically in a good position’ as they prepare to do battle for a place in the final four of this summer’s championships.

‘We had six days preparation before the last game so and although the game the other day was intense and emotional, it was only 90 minutes,’ he added.

‘So I think everybody is fine in terms of physical load. We’ve of course got a strong squad and a strong bench.

‘The heat here is going to have a little bit of a factor by the end of the game I would think so we’ve just got to manage people through that.

‘But the players are all physically in a good position.’

A dogged Ukraine progressed past Sweden in extra-time to secure their place in the quarter-finals and Southgate is expecting a difficult encounter against Andriy Shevchenko’s ‘spirited’ side.

Asked whether he’s anticipating a tough match against Ukraine, Southgate replied: ‘Definitely. We know that Andriy has done a fantastic job with the Ukrainian team.

‘We watched them a lot, particularly a year ago.

‘We could see how well they use the ball, they’ve got a threat with their forwards and of course they’ve got tremendous spirit and they showed all of those things against Sweden.

‘I know they were criticised during the group stage but they showed all of their quality against Sweden and we know it’s a game we’ve got to be well prepared for.’
