A mum who was left with horrific injuries after a heater exploded in the pub has revealed how someone threw a bottle of Pinot Grigio over her to try to put out the flames.

April Charlesworth, 28, was out celebrating her birthday with her cousin Ashleigh, 27, on April 24, when the pair were caught in the blast.

Pictures have been released of April in hospital showing the severe burns she suffered in the incident, which was caused when a ‘man in a drunken state’ kept pouring ethanol into the heater ‘for a laugh.’

April, a support worker for Your Life Care Solutions, says she’s suffering panic attacks and flashbacks in the wake of the explosion and fears it will be a ‘long journey’ to recovery.

Both cousins had to be put on ventilators in different hospitals and they are still waiting to find out whether they require more surgery to treat their injuries.

April said: ‘A certain person, who was part of the group I was with, thought it was funny to keep filling the heater up with ethanol.

‘He was in a bit of a drunken state, and we kept telling him not to do it.

‘There was another member of our group who was stopping him from doing it – but then they went off to the toilet for just a minute, and everything happened so quickly. All I remember was my face just being on fire.’

She added: ‘I had someone chuck a bottle of wine over me and then I was taken to the toilet and had water splashed all over me.’

It’s thought the heater had been brought to the Kings Head pub in Great Cornard, Suffolk by one of the customers.

April was rushed to Bury St Edmunds Hospital before being put to sleep and transferred to Queen Victoria Hospital in London.

She was put on a ventilator and woke up four days later with serious burns to her neck, hands and face.

Doctors have given April donor skin whilst her own recovers, but the full extent of her injuries is not yet known.

She’s revealed her son has not been to visit her in hospital because she doesn’t want him to see her in her current state.

April added that she has been speaking to her cousin Ashleigh – who spent two days on a ventilator in Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex – most days and they are supporting each other through their recovery.

But she added: ‘I haven’t spoken to the guy since who kept pouring ethanol into the heater. I haven’t even had a text or anything to apologise.

‘He was able to walk out of hospital after just 36 hours, whereas here I still am 12 days later.’

Fundraising pages have been set up for both women and have already raised thousands of pounds to help them with their recovery.

April said: ‘I didn’t expect that many people to be so supportive. It was a big shock. It means a lot.’

Suffolk Police say no arrests have been made, but a man has been voluntarily interviewed regarding the incident. A spokesman said enquiries are ongoing.

He said: ‘The two females remain in hospital receiving treatment for their injuries.

‘Their condition is described as stable and their injuries are life-changing.

‘One of them is at Broomfield, Chelmsford and the other is at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.

‘No arrests have been made or charges. However, a man has been interviewed voluntarily regarding the incident. Enquiries are ongoing in regards to the circumstances.’
