Piers Morgan has defended his attendance at the Euro 2020 final while slamming intruders who he believes will ‘probably turn the game into a super-spreader event’.

Official attendance at Wembley was around 67,000 on Sunday night, as punters snapped up tickets to catch the match which saw England lose to Italy, as the game went to penalties following extra time.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter had been present for several Euro games throughout the tournament and insisted those in the crowd were either vaccinated or had presented a negative Covid-19 test before being let in.

However, while praising the safety measures taken by Wembley bosses, a double-jabbed Piers went on to slam those who had forced their way into the stadium without tickets.

In chaotic and violent scenes, hundreds of intruders reportedly gatecrashed the final, with footage filmed showing punches thrown and people lying on top of each other as the crush overwhelms stewards at a turnstile.

During the game, riot police moved in outside the ground as stewards and security struggled to cope with the repeated attempts by ticketless crowds to force entry.

At first, it was described by the FA as a small security breach but reports emerged this week that ‘at least hundreds’ had managed to barge in and watch the game, with an investigation now underway.

After Piers fumed over the upcoming July 19 ‘freedom day’ as Covid cases still numbered in the tens of thousands, he was branded a ‘hypocrite’ by a follower who said he ‘looked pretty free at Wembley’.

In response, Piers hit back: ‘Yes, it felt safe and covid compliant (everyone either fully vaccinated or negative LFT) at Wembley during the Euros until the final when 1000s of drunken morons crashed their way in with no tickets or testing – and probably turned it into a huge super-spreader event.’

Piers previously defended his Wembley attendance.

The journalist had tweeted: ‘So to summarise: we’re steaming ahead to covid ‘freedom’ on July 19 as cases and hospitalisations are accelerating again and just 1/3 of us have been fully vaccinated.

‘Boris Johnson is taking yet another massive gamble in this pandemic – and none of his other gambles worked.’

When someone called him out for later heading to the game, Piers quipped: ‘Very happy to attend outdoor events where everyone is either fully vaccinated or has had a lateral flow test.

‘Not so happy if everything gets opened up on July 19 without such requirements, and with covid cases surging so fast + many millions still unvaccinated.’
