Imagine the wild scenes of celebrations that would unfold tonight if England wins its first major football tournament since 1966.

Now imagine how you’re feeling at work on Monday morning.

That’s the potential prospect facing a lot of people as Euro 2020 nears its conclusion.

A stunning 4-0 win over Ukraine in the quarter-final prompted nation-wide celebrations from England fans, with millions belting out ‘it’s coming home’ while taking to the streets and dancing on tables.

The celebrations were even bigger after the semi-final win, as England beat Denmark 2-1 to secure a place in their first-ever Euros final.

So is there any potential for there to be a bank holiday if England beat the odds and bring it home?

Will we get a bank holiday if England wins Euro 2020?

It’s not yet known if there’s going to be a bank holiday – but it’s not likely to take place tomorrow.

Such an event would be announced by a Royal Proclamation from the Queen, according to the House of Commons Library.

The bank holiday suggestion would need to come from Prime Minister Boris Johnson first.

The Mirror reported that ministers were afraid an announcement would jinx the outcome, preferring to wait for the result before deciding if we get an extra day off.

‘By convention the Queen acts on the advice of ministers. The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is the government department responsible for bank holidays,’ Parliament’s website explains.

Mr Johnson certainly seems to be enjoying the Euros having pledged his support to the national team throughout and ahead of today’s game he posed with an England shirt with ‘Boris 10’ on it.

During England’s journey to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals there was much the same hype across the nation of people getting excited and there was clamour for a bank holiday had they won the tournament.

Then-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and shadow home secretary Emily Thornberry called for one and 200,000 fans signed a petition demanding a bank holiday.

This year there there is already a petition going for those who continue to dream which has 358,000 signatures currently.

Any potential triumph in the final would likely result in a victory parade – but it could be delayed until September due to coronavirus restrictions.

The Football Association (FA) has reportedly opted against holding a mass event this month if the Three Lions win the European Championships on Sunday.

While a bank holiday remains far from uncertain, many workers across the nation will be hoping their employers give them the day off after the final (or at least a later start!) should England win.

Many fans will have already booked off Monday, July 12 in anticipation of a wild Sunday night and signatures for a bank holiday petition will surely be on the rise.

Now all that remains to be seen is if England can truly bring it home tonight.
