Everton legend Duncan Ferguson has turned down an offer from Carlo Ancelotti to join his backroom staff at Real Madrid because he wants to replace the Italian at Goodison Park.
Ancelotti rejoined Real Madrid earlier this week after agreeing to replace Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.
Ferguson briefly took caretaker charge of the Toffees before Ancelotti’s arrival and he was unbeaten in his three matches in charge, picking up five points in the process.
The Scot wanted the job at Goodison Park but agreed to work under Ancelotti as the Italian was keen to keep a close tie to the club within his backroom team.

Ferguson impressed Ancelotti during the pair’s time together and the Sun claim the Italian offered the Scot the chance to join him in the Spanish capital as part of his coaching staff at Real Madrid.
However, despite being offered the chance to work at one of the world’s biggest clubs, Ferguson rejected the opportunity because he believes he has a chance of replacing Ancelotti.
Everton have already opened talks with former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo over taking over on Merseyside.
But Ferguson believes he can convince majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri that he’s the right man for the job and he’d ask former team-mate Lee Carsley to return to the club as his assistant.
