ITV has released some first look images of new drama Stephen.

The three-part series, which stars Sharlene Whyte, Steve Coogan and Hugh Quarshie, is the sequel to 1999’s The Murder of Stephen Lawrence.

The programme is set to air later this year, with Small Axe’s Whyte playing Doreen Lawrence alongside Absentia’s Quarshie reprising his role as Neville Lawrence from the original drama.

Meanwhile, Coogan stars as DCI Clive Driscoll, who led the investigation into Stephen’s murder which saw two of his killers convicted 18 years after his death.

One of the new images shows the family in court during the trial, while another photo shows a roadside tribute.

And Coogan can also be seen in a previously-unseen shot from courtroom scenes.

On April 22, 1993, aspiring architect Stephen was stabbed to death by a group of five white men who launched an unprovoked attack as he waited at a bus stop with a friend in Eltham, southeast London.

Two people were convicted over the murder, but Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick has said it is a ‘matter of huge regret’ that the remaining suspects were not brought to justice.

The series will focus on the Lawrence family in the years after Stephen’s death.

It ‘tells the story of the ongoing struggle by Doreen and Neville Lawrence to achieve justice’ and explores how the detective worked closely with them to put together an investigation that finally ‘secures the convictions of two of the gang who committed the murder of Stephen’.

Director Alrick Riley said: ‘Current events only highlight how relevant and important Stephen’s case remains.

‘The case of Stephen Lawrence is a testament to the fortitude, persistence and determination of the Lawrence family.’

And executive producer Mark Redhead previously commented: ‘It’s a privilege to be working with Doreen and Neville Lawrence to tell this chapter of the story of their campaign for justice for Stephen.

‘It’s a story that moves and inspires and is ever more resonant and relevant today.’

Stephen will arrive on ITV in the autumn.
