Prince Harry and Meghan have been urged to tighten security at their £11 million home in Los Angeles after four black bears were spotted in the neighbourhood.

The Duchess of Sussex, who gave birth to a baby girl on Friday, lives with her husband in the swanky mansion in Montecito, Santa Barbara, close to A-listers such as Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres.

A residents’ group, of which the Sussexes are members, reported sightings of the bears on both eastern and western sides of the region.

In an online meeting Montecito Association executive director Sharon Byrne said the bears had ‘woken up’, the Mirror reports.

The latest warning comes a month after a large bear killed eight chickens at the home of the former royals’ neighbour Penelope Bianchi.

Sharon said: ‘We’ve nicknamed the male bear Carlos and now he has a Carla to go with him.

‘It’s spring, they’ve woken up and they’ve been seen in the past two weeks – one at the eastern edge of Montecito and one at the western edge in the space of a day.

‘We’ve also had a sighting of the mama bear with cubs.’

Residents were given tips on bear-proofing their homes and pets.

The Duke, 36, and Duchess, 39, were advised to keep their chickens in a secure yard and buy bear-resistant bins.

Food waste should be frozen so the smell doesn’t attract bears.

State agency the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said: ‘People should not give bears access to food.

‘If you come across one, talk quietly and back off slowly.’

The couple bought the extravagant nine-bedroom home in August as they seek to create a new life for themselves on the other side of the Atlantic.

Earlier today they announced the birth of their second child, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.
