Leaders of the G7 will meet next week to discuss global issues like technology, the environment, and the pandemic.
The event was cancelled last year due to coronavirus, but this year delegations will be heading to the UK for the summit.
Ahead of the event, finance ministers met in London to discuss a deal that would allow countries to tax multinationals.
But when exactly is the G7 summit?
When is the G7 summit 2021?
The G7 summit will take place between June 11-13 this year.
It will be held in Carbis Bay, an area in Cornwall, with Falmouth, St Ives, and Newquay holding key events.
The group of seven – the UK, the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan – will meet to discuss policy over the weekend.
The group are formed on the principle that they represent “advanced economies and open societies”.
What is the G7 summit?
The G7 summit is a chance for global heads to meet, and discuss political issues among themselves like finance and equality.
The Group of Seven was at one point the G8 – but Russia was excluded in 2014 for the annexation of Crimea, and it’s unlikely they will return in the immediate future.
China is also not a part of the group, despite its size, as its relatively low wealth per person exempts it.
The group first gathered in 1975. Together, the nations make up around 40% of the world economy, and 10% of the earth’s population.
What will happen at the G7 summit 2021?
The priorities listed on the G7 summit website were:
- leading the global recovery from coronavirus while strengthening our resilience against future pandemics
- promoting our future prosperity by championing free and fair trade
- tackling climate change and preserving the planet’s biodiversity
- championing our shared values
The event usually takes place annually, allowing world leaders like the UK’s Boris Johnson and Japan’s Shinzo Abe to speak about international issues.
Delegations from India, South Korea and South Africa will also attend as guests.
