Gareth Southgate singled out three of his England players for praise after the Three Lions eased to a 5-0 victory over minnows San Marino on Thursday.

Southgate’s side got their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign off to a solid start with a comfortable win against the world’s lowest-ranked team in international football at Wembley.

James Ward-Prowse opened the scoring after 14 minutes with his first England goal as he converted Ben Chilwell’s cut-back before goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Raheem Sterling saw the Three Lions go into the half-time break with a 3-0 lead.

Calvert-Lewin got his second of the night when he tapped into an open net from Jesse Lingard’s pass and Aston Villa’s in-form striker Ollie Watkins marked his England debut with a goal as he drilled in a low effort past San Marino goalkeeper Elia Benedettini.

Lingard, who returned to play for his country for the first time in almost two years following his excellent form for West Ham of late, looked lively but couldn’t find the back of the net as he was denied by Benedittini on multiple occasions.

Despite the level of opposition, Southgate was pleased with his side’s performance and singled out Lingard, Kalvin Phillips and Mason Mount.

‘I think we did as well as we could, really,’ Southgate told ITV. ‘I was really pleased with not only the way we moved the ball quickly and the interchange of positions but the way we pressed when we lost the ball highlighted the mentality of the team for the full 90 minutes.

‘So of course, it’s an opponent we should beat but I thought they went about the job really well.’

When asked who impressed him the most, Southgate replied: ‘I thought there were lots of good individual performances, we said that there was high individual motivation as well as the team and it’ll be difficult to pick one out.

‘I thought midfield players moved the ball really well, Kalvin Phillips, I was really pleased for him, he’s used the ball well but his athleticism around the pitch was good.

‘Mason in the first half, excellent, I thought set the tone. Good to see Jesse looking like he’s enjoying his football again. So I thought there were a lot of good things.’

Next up, the Three Lions face Albania in Tirana on Sunday before heading back to Wembley to take on Poland next Wednesday.
