Around 10 per cent of all Ikea products are reported to be subject to availability.
‘What we are seeing is a perfect storm of issues, including the disruption of global trade flows and a shortage of drivers, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic and Brexit,’ an insider said.
Supermarkets and restaurant chains across the UK have also been besieged by shortages, with McDonalds running out of milkshakes while Nando’s has been forced to close some branches due to a lack of chicken.
The situation is so dire it has prompted the chief executive of the Cooperative Group to declare it is the ‘worst he has ever seen’.
And it comes amid fears that Christmas could be affected by food shortages.
An Ikea spokesperson said: ‘Like many retailers, we are experiencing ongoing challenges with our supply chains due to COVID-19 and labour shortages, with transport, raw materials and sourcing all impacted.
‘In addition, we are seeing higher customer demand as more people are spending more time at home.
‘As a result, we are experiencing low availability in some of our ranges, including mattresses.
‘We hope this will reduce as the situation improves in the coming weeks and months.
‘Going forward, we’re constantly looking for more opportunities to secure product availability for our customers and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.’
Pints of Carling and Coors are unavailable in some branches.
Signs were posted in pubs warning punters their favourite beer may not be available due to ‘supply issues regards to lack of lorry drivers and strike action which are out of our control’.
Britain is lacking more than 100,000 lorry drivers with the crisis exacerbated by Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic.
Now the shortage has left residents in a dozen council areas across the UK facing bin collection delays.
It was reported in August how the Army have been put on standby to deliver supplies to supermarkets in a bid to tackle the problem.
