Following Sally’s release from prison in episode one, several possible suspects have been assessed by the police as they unearth new evidence in their investigation.
Karen Moss (Priyanga Burford), the fiancée of Sally’s ex-husband Sam Wright (Jamie Bamber) has been of particular interest, as remnants of her DNA were found on the coat worn by Matty when he died.
But in the end, it was someone very close to Sally who let her go to jail for a crime she did not commit.
Who killed Matty Taylor?
In episode four of Innocent’s second series, Sally discovers that it was Sam who not only murdered Matty, but was also having an affair with the teenager.
At the point that Sally learns this information, she and Sam have reconciled their relationship and plan to leave the town to start a new life together.
After finding a note written to Sam from Matty confirming their affair, Sally confronts her ex-husband, who says that he fell for Matty and became romantically involved with him when he was Sally’s student.
Eventually, Sam decided to end their relationship as he didn’t want it to impact his marriage to Sally, he said.
However, in the midst of a heated argument with Matty about his decision, he killed the student with a bottle and let Sally take the fall for it.
Despite Bethany Moss (Amy-Leigh Hickman) confessing to Matty’s murder as a means of protecting her mother in police custody, the detectives realise Sam is likely involved when they find an Amazon gift card given to Matty that was paid for by Sam’s debit card.
They also find out that the alibi Sam originally gave was fake.
When Matty was killed, Sam said that he was with Aaron Holmes at the time, a man he was working with in his capacity as a probation officer.
After Aaron’s attempt to blackmail Sam goes sour, he reveals to the police that he and Sam had an ‘arrangement’ at the time of Matty’s murder.
The arrangement meant that Aaron was allowed to do what he wanted on Wednesday afternoons if he promised to lie and say he was with Sam if anyone ever asked – thus covering for Sam’s affair with Matty.
