Prior to the start of the season, it wasn’t even certain if Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Connor was going to be able to take the field. That now feels like a thing of the past, with the 25-year-old cancer survivor now playing some of his best football in recent years. Steelers star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger could not agree any more.
According to Roethlisberger, he firmly believes that Connor is playing at a different level at the moment:
“His game right now is at an all-time high,” Roethlisberger said, via Brooke Pyror of ESPN. “He’s picking up blitzes. He’s catching the ball out of the backfield when we need him to, and he’s getting the tough yards when we need that as well. The thing I keep telling him is to just have fun. When he has fun, he plays great football.”
The coronavirus pandemic cast doubt on Connor playing out the final year of his rookie contract, but in truth, he never really had any hesitations. Connor literally risked his life to be able to play this term, and what a decision that turned out to be.
In Pittsburgh’s Week 7 win against the Tennessee Titans, Connor rushed 20 times for an 82-yard gain. He also caught 3-of-5 targets for 29 yards. This has pretty much been the theme for him throughout the season, and if this trend continues for the from him, he could be in store for his second Pro Bowl nod.
