It has been a season to forget for the Reds as they have meekly surrendered their Premier League title and are struggling even to qualify for the Champions League next season. They will end the season with no silverware and will now just be hoping for a top four finish
Liverpool have been hampered by seriously bad luck in terms of injuries, losing trio of centre-backs Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip for huge parts of the season, but Carragher believes they have struggled in attack as much as defence.
The renowned front three have not fired nearly as much as previous seasons, with Salah netting 20 times in the Premier League in another phenomenal effort, but Mane managing eight and Firmino just six.
It has been a wildly successful time for the trio, lifting the Premier League and Champions League trophies, but Carragher feels they are now past their sell-by date as a triumvirate.
‘People have talked about the forward line being out of form, but it’s been too long now for that [to be used as an argument],’ Carragher told Sky Sports.
‘People keep talking about Liverpool’s problems at centre-back, but their biggest problem is at the other end of the pitch.
‘When you look at other great attacking partnerships and front threes from the past, they last probably three years and then you move on. Liverpool’s have been together for probably four or five years so it does need breaking up in the summer.’
Carragher didn’t go as far as saying who should be sacrificed and which player, or players, should be brought in, but does feel investment is needed.
‘That’s where Liverpool need to invest, as they do at centre-back of course,’ said the former England defender. ‘It’s actually quite similar to Manchester United, but that’s where Liverpool need to spend the money.
‘The front three have been amazing but it’s just at that stage now where it needs something else and it must be rectified in the summer when you think of the chances that have been missed this season. You have to move with the times, and an extra bit of competition up front wouldn’t go amiss.’
