Jason Sudeikis has been praised for wearing a shirt honouring Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho to the premiere of Ted Lasso season two.

Jason’s character in the Apple TV+ show – an American football coach turned manager of a London Premier League side – is the epitome of kindness and positivity, and people praised the actor as the real life Lasso thanks to his sweet gesture.

The 45-year-old showed his support for the three England players who missed penalties during last Sunday’s Euro 2020 final against Italy, and subsequently received disgusting racist abuse on social media.

At the premiere at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, Jason wore a black sweatshirt reading ‘Jadon & Marcus & Bukayo’, showing support for the three Lions.

The gesture was applauded on Twitter, with one person calling Jason a ‘class act’.

NBC’s Roger Bennett tweeted: ‘Huge love for Jason Sudeikis’s sweatshirt at tonight’s Ted Lasso Season 2 Premier. Shows that like his character, he truly understands that football in his heart, is all about human goodness.’

Journalist Chris Gardner added: ‘Beautiful move. Jason Sudeikis IS Ted Lasso.’

Sancho, Rashford and Saka – three Black players – missed out on their penalties on Sunday after stepping up to represent England, and were targeted with vile abuse on their Instagram accounts and across Twitter.

A mural of Rashford in Manchester was also defaced with insults.

Four people have been arrested and dozens are under investigation in relation to the abuse. A 37-year-old estate agent was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of an offence under the Malicious Communications Act after a racist message was posted on his Twitter profile moments after the missed penalties.

The rest of the England team has spoken out against the abuse, with captain Harry Kane saying: ‘They deserve support and backing, not the vile racist abuse they’ve had since last night. Three lads who were brilliant all summer had the courage to step up and take a pen when the stakes were high.

‘If you abuse anyone on social media you’re not an England fan and we don’t want you.’

Ted Lasso became a surprise smash last year, and won a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Jason, while it has landed 13 Emmy nominations including one for outstanding comedy series.

The show follows Lasso, an optimistic American who finds himself managing floundering team AFC Richmond after the club owner decides to tank the team to spite her cheating ex-husband.

However, while Lasso has a rough start with both the players and the locals of Richmond, he soon finds himself being embraced by England.

The second season has already been hailed in reviews as as good as the first season, as Ted tries to bring AFC Richmond back from relegation.

The show also stars Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Juno Temple.

Ted Lasso season two premieres on Apple TV+ on July 23.
