The Biden administration has unveiled a plan to invest $3.2billion to build a supply of oral pills to treat Covid-19 and other viruses to better prepare for pandemics in the future.

It will be called the Antiviral Program for Pandemics and the American Rescue Plan will fund it, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, said during a press briefing on Thursday.

‘New antivirals that prevent serious Covid-19 illness and death, especially oral drugs that could be taken at home early in the course of disease, would be powerful tools for battling the pandemic and saving lives,’ Fauci said in a statement.

‘Through multidisciplinary collaborations among leading scientists in academia and industry, this investment from the American Rescue Plan to create the Antiviral Program for Pandemics will help inspire medical innovation and build on the extraordinary success we have seen in developing the Covid-19 vaccines.’

Fauci, who is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, during the briefing also reiterated that getting vaccinated is crucial to fighting coronavirus.

The US reached a grim milestone on Tuesday of more than 600,000 Covid-19 deaths, the highest of any country in the world.
