The Belgium international was briefly coached by Mourinho during the formative years of a Chelsea career that never got going, before the Special One recruited the prolific forward for Manchester United in the summer of 2017.
Lukaku amassed 113 goals in 252 Premier League appearances for four different clubs, having also represented West Brom and Everton, but was deemed surplus to requirements by Mourinho’s United successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The 28-year-old has since rebuilt his reputation with Inter where his goals helped power Antonio Conte’s side to a first Serie A title win in over a decade last season.
Lukaku represents one of the favourites to win the Golden Boot at Euro 2020 and Mourinho is confident his former charge will be one of the stars of the tournament.
He told The Times: ‘I think it’s a great moment for him to say to the world: ‘I’m here and I’m one the best strikers.’ These two years at Inter Milan have given him the stature and the self-confidence that he didn’t have before.
‘At Chelsea, he was still a kid. At Manchester United, he was still developing. At Inter he became the top man. He became loved – a big love from the supporters, love from teammates, great relations with the coach.
‘He’s a big guy, physically so strong, but there is also a kid inside who needs that love, needs that support, needs to feel important.’
Lukaku’s goalscoring exploits in Italy have prompted fresh speculation around his future, especially in light of Inter’s dire financial situation.
Chelsea have been linked with a move to bring back a player who made only 10 top flight appearances for them during his three years at Stamford Bridge, but Lukaku is adamant he remains happy at San Siro.
‘Yes, I am staying,’ Lukaku told the broadcaster VTM last week. ‘I feel good at Inter.’ ‘I’ve already had contact with the man who normally becomes our new manager,” said Lukaku, speaking before Inzaghi was confirmed in the job.
‘Maybe I shouldn’t say that yet … but it was a very positive conversation. There’s also the challenge of doing it again [winning the league].’
