Riot Games’ first-ever TV show will soon air as the animated series ‘Arcane’ will release on Netflix sometime in autumn, 2021.

The production was originally revealed back in October 2019 during League of Legends’ 10-year anniversary celebrations.

The official description of the series reads: ‘Set in utopian Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun, the story follows the origins of two iconic League champions – and the power that will tear them apart.’

The teaser trailer confirmed what many had already expected, the two LoL champions the show will revolve around are sisters Vi and Jinx as both featured heavily in the brief shots shown in the new teaser trailer. However, not much else is known about the series or its plot.

Arcane was originally supposed to air last year but was delayed due to complications involving the COVID-19 pandemic as explained by Riot’s Greg ‘Ghostcrawler’ Street:

‘Creative development and production is hard, especially in a world where you can’t see your coworkers IRL [in real life]. We have video meetings now, which help, but they are no substitute for being in a room where we can really get the creative energy flowing. Combine these issues, along with the technical difficulties of production at the international scale, and the problem becomes a lot bigger.’

The Runeterra region of Piltover and Zaun is a city divided by poverty. The former is a steampunk city rich with innovation and technology while Zaun is an underground district that has managed to develop alongside the city above it, as inventors find their way into the black market.

Other LoL champions are expected to feature in the series alongside Vi and Jinx with Heimerdinger, Caitlyn, Warwick, Ekko, Ezreal, and Singed just some of the many possibilities.

While Riot have released multiple cinematics revolving around their LoL universe and Netflix have also featured multiple documentaries surrounding the game, this is the first time that Riot has created an episodic TV series.
