Brendan Rodgers has confirmed he will be without the injured Jonny Evans for Leicester’s upcoming Premier League clash with top-four rivals Chelsea.

A heel problem meant Evans missed Leicester’s recent matches with Newcastle and Manchester United and the defender returned for the side’s historic FA Cup triumph over Chelsea, only to be forced off in the first half at Wembley.

There had been hopes the 33-year-old would be able to shake off his latest setback to feature when the two teams meet again in the English top flight on Tuesday night, a match which could prove decisive in this year’s fiercely contested race for Champions League qualification.

But club captain Wes Morgan may have a role to play at Stamford Bridge after his cameo appearance alongside Caglar Soyuncu and Wesley Fofana at the weekend.

Asked for an update on Evans’ condition at his pre-match press conference on Monday morning, Rodgers told reporters: ‘He won’t play in the game. He’ll struggle for that.

‘We’ll see what he’s like for the weekend.’

Pressed on whether Leicester had any fresh injury concerns, Rodgers replied: ‘Nothing to report at the moment.

‘It’s only the second day after the game so we’ll see how they are after we get them moving.’

Rodgers believes his players will have to match Chelsea physically to come out on top, with Thomas Tuchel’s men likely out for revenge and hurting in the wake of their defeat at Wembley.

‘When you are a club that wants to win, you know sometimes you will fall short,’ Rodgers – who worked as a coach at Chelsea from 2004 to 2008 – said.

‘They are in the Champions League final for a reason. They’ve got an excellent squad.

‘We have to work hard and be equally aggressive and see if we can make our chances count.’

Rodgers added: ‘I think it will be tactically the same, two teams super organised, a tight game. That was the beauty of it.

‘Maybe neutrals are looking for a 5-4, but two teams organised, and moments of quality from Youri [Tielemans] and Kasper [Schmeichel].

‘If it’s the same tomorrow night, I’ll be very pleased.’

Fifth-placed Liverpool kept their Champions League qualification hopes alive thanks to Alisson’s incredible last-gasp header away to West Brom and Rodgers feels Sam Allardyce will be bitterly ‘disappointed’ to come away from the match with nothing.

But the Northern Irishman is far more concerned about his own team’s results than those of the club’s around them in the table, with two games remaining of the season.

‘There’s no ramifications for us. We have to control what we do and we have it in our hands,’ Rodgers said when reflecting on Liverpool’s dramatic victory at the Hawthorns.

‘We’ve got European football but we have two games to arrive in the top four.

‘We can only control what we have ourselves.

‘Big Sam will be disappointed because they defended well.

‘We have a great opportunity to qualify and we intend to take it.’
