Jurgen Klopp admits that the three Liverpool defenders who have been out injured for months may not be back for the start of pre-season as Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all continue their recoveries.

Van Dijk and Gomez have been out with serious knee ligament injuries while Matip has had an ankle ligament problem.

While they are all fighting to get back to fitness, it is an extremely slow process for all three centre-backs and they may not even be ready for the beginning of pre-season this summer, according to the Reds boss.

‘Our new season will start in the summer with pre-season and it’s not certain the three guys will start with us,’ said Klopp. ‘So first of all the boys who came in did incredibly well. I love what they did.

‘This year Nat [Phillips] and Rhys [Williams] have created two proper careers because even when you are at an academy at whichever club, that is not written in stone.

‘But now they have shown how good they are and everything is fine.

‘We do need the numbers of centre-halves because we need to work on all the different things and step by step hopefully get the other guys back.

‘But football and team selection is based on performances in training and pre-season friendlies or proper competition games so the door is always open.’

Phillips and Williams started at centre-back in the 4-2 win over Manchester United on Thursday, while Ozan Kabak has also been playing while on loan from Schalke.

Reports suggest that Liverpool are not looking to make Kabak’s move permanent and Klopp is hoping Phillips and Williams can hold the fort until the more experienced trio have returned.
