Liverpool news: Pep Guardiola should replace Jurgen Klopp, reckons John Barnes

Liverpool legend John Barnes says Pep Guardiola is the ideal candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager, a better choice than Steven Gerrard.

Klopp’s contract at Liverpool runs until 2024 and he is expected to move on when that deal comes to an end, regardless of what happens over the next three years.

Rangers boss, and Reds legend, Steven Gerrard has emerged as the likely candidate to take over from the German after an impressive start to his managerial career in Scotland.

However, after just three years in charge in Glasgow and never having managed elsewhere, Barnes does not see Gerrard as the ideal choice at the moment, and would take Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, given the choice of anyone to replace Klopp.

On the German’s ideal replacement, Barnes told BettingOdds.com: ‘Pep Guardiola. Of course there are other managers that you would think are better suited, such as Steven Gerrard who has had a very good season at Rangers, but is he going to come to Liverpool off the back of one good year? Of course he would be given time because of his relationship with Liverpool.

‘If you were to ask me now, if Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool tomorrow would I think Steven was the man for the job? Probably not because you would want a manager with more experience and is proven at the highest level. He would be given time because he’s Steven Gerrard, but would that be the right thing for Liverpool? Maybe not.

‘I’m sure Steven will do really well over the course of his career, but he’s going to have to show a longer level of consistency over a longer period of time before we start linking him with the Liverpool job.’

Unless things go horribly wrong for Gerrard at Rangers, a romantic return to Anfield seems likely at some stage and the England hero has already admitted that there has been clear interest in making that happen from his former club.

‘There has been interest, and I don’t think I have to talk about where that comes from,’ he told the Telegraph in March.

‘All that does is that it tells me I am on the right lines. I am doing a decent job. My players are doing a decent job. I take it as a compliment.’
